Backing up Vault to Tape Question

Thread needs solution

Hello,

Sorry for al lthe questions but taking over the system and now being responsible for backup and DR you want to make sure you are doing things right

The previous admin was using this strategy which im very unsure of

1. Backup all servers to 4 Centeralised Vaults  -> Backup the 4 Vault Folders to Tape

I have now backed up all servers to the vault, I have also backed up the Vault folders to tape but when i go to the tape vault to check recovery it only shows the backed up contents under folders\files.

Am i right to assume this is the wrong way to do things and recovery would be impossible? Could we import these folders into a vault in DR situation? Backing up the actual machines to tape after the local Disk to disk has run seems right but i think he wanted to take some stress off the network. I would rather be safe and have a full recovery solution

Thanks

Hello Keith,

You are absolutely right, we don't recommend "backing up backups" either, as this could lead to issues with recovery. I'd suggest considering the following models:

Example 4. Moving older backups to tapes < - older backups will be physically moved to tapes

Example 5. Backing up to tapes within a narrow backup window < - newly created backups will be copied to tapes (you'll end up having the same backup sets locally and on tapes, retention time can be adjusted)

Thank you,
