Backup to optical media?

Thread needs solution

Hi, I am interested in knowing some ways and suggestions for working with re-writable optical media as location to store data to. I have always noticed that Windows when you insert a disc will give you two options. One is like a "Like a USB flash drive". I assume that this can be good if you want to use the disc for file storage or backup. I am assuming that it is a good backup place because it can’t fail like a hard drive or thumb drive and it can be updated as needed. So I tried this with Acronis 11.5 and I pointed it to a directory that I created on the media. The backup failed like this. Then I just used the drive letter as location and it succeeded. So what I would like help understanding is. How do I create a scheduled backup that over writes the last? I would like the backup to be full. Also what happens if the drive letter stored in the backup settings changes? Thanks

Hello Chris,

The current design is not really meant to overwrite the existing backup. This is done for security reasons, mostly. If it fails during the backup, you've already lost the old one and the new one wasn't finished.  We will probably change this design in the future.

In the meantime, I would suggest looking into a pre-command to remove the old archive before the new one is written. This will, as far as I know, require third-party command line tools to burn a cd (something like CreateCD for example).

Thank you.
