Best Method to Replicate Incrementals Offsite

Thread needs solution

Hi I'm having some issues trying to figure out the best method to replicate incremental backups.

I create a scheduled job and do not choose the option to replicate at this time since it will be generating a large full backup.

After the full backup has completed, I copy the TIB, Catalog/XML files to a drive and bring them my offsite location and copy them down to the local storage.

I go back to the scheduled job and modify the job to now support Replication (by FTP) to my offsite location.

When I run Replication/Cleanup Location 2 job, it fails with an invalid archive error.

So how am I supposed to seed my initial full backups to my offsite location and just push daily incrementals to it?

All the searching I've found for "seeding" refer to the online backup service which I do not have or want. I just want to replicate incrementals only to my offsite after I "seed" (by copying full to HDD and then offloading to my offsite storage).

Thanks in advance,

Rich

I tried what you described (with two local folders as vaults) and it worked. You may did something in a different way or it may be the problem with FTP vault used as the second destination. Does it work if you backup some small file there? Does the replication work if you attach the drive with copied files locally and set up replication there, to test it?

Hi Fedor,

If I create a backup job with replication on a small folder for testing, this works properly and as expected. However, I have 1TB+ of full backups I want to copy to my offsite location and then modify the backup job to include replication.

1. Schedule full backup job with daily incremental
2. Run full backup job
3. Verify full backup
4. Copy contents of full backup to an external disk
5. Copy external disk full backup data to offsite storage unit
6. Reconfigure Step 1 full backup job to include Replication
7. Run incremental backup of job from Step 1 which now includes Replication
8. Incremental task completes successfully - Replication to 2nd location fails.

I have confirmed the FTP information is correct and is the same structure as the initial backup job.

My question is: What do I need to have at my remote site to allow just incremental backups to be replicated? Can I get away with just the TIB file?

The other thing to consider is that backup to FTP splits the archive by 2 GB because of some limitations of FTP protocol (or the way it's used in ABR). It may be that archive on FTP that is not split can't be processed properly. Can you perform these steps for some backup job (with full archive slightly over 2 GB) first without split option and then with archive splitting in backup options set to 2 gb or slightly less?
Officially, IIRC, this was never tested and there is no procedure to set replication after you had copied the backup to the second location manually.
