Cannot Restore To Dissimilar Disk

Thread needs solution

I'm trying to restore a backup to a different physical computer with a smaller HDD.  When using the bootable recovery media to perform the recovery, I am unable to finish configuring the recovery task.  It shows an error saying "Cannot resize partition".  I can't seem to find any information on this.

Hello Mitchell,

Thank you for your posting! I would recommend first of all to make sure your source and target drives has no bad sectors through running chkdsk Drive_letter: /f /r. Next if you are restoring the data to the new dissimilar hardware, it's important to use Acronis Universal Restore add-on. I hope this helps.

Thank you,

Thanks for your help.  I found out that yes, I needed to do Universal Restore.  I'm a little irritated by how unapparent it is to create Universal Restore media.  The media creation tool defaults to Linux.  The other option is to do WinPE, but during that wizard at no point does it emphasize that WinPE is required for Universal Restore of Windows machines.

Also during the backup process of the source machine, there was an error which forced Acronis into a sector-by-sector backup.  This prevents restoring the disk to a smaller one even with Universal Restore.  So I restored to a larger drive and once the drivers were finished on the new machine, I ran a chkdsk on it which fixed the error.  I was then able to clone said new machine to the smaller HDD.

Thanks again!
