Confusion regarding .xml Files and Catalog Folder

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I am evaluation Acronis Backup 11.5 for purchase for my company, but I am having issues figuring out a couple of things even after reading the help documentation of the program.

Basically what I want to achieve is do a monthly full backup of a particular folder and then differential backup of the same folder on daily basis for the rest of the month.

Now following are my confusions/issues:

1). Is there any way to have a user defined name of .tib files for both full and differential backups? Since what I have noticed is that differential backup needs to be part of the same backup plan which is doing the full backups and a backup plan only gives one place to define the archive (*.tib files) name? How can one distinguish which .tib file is a full backup and which .tib files are of differential backups?

2). When the backup job completes, I am noticing a catalog folder in the destination location of the backup. I searched for a way to disable the creation of this folder and found a suggestion to use "Fast Cataloging" option to disable it. However, this folder is still getting created even after enabling the "Fast Cataloging" option and I don't understand what is the purpose of it. There are also .xml files getting created in the backup destination. So based on my my backup requirements stated above, I would have 1 .tib file for Full Backup and 29 .tib files for Differential Backups at the end of the month of June. If I simply copy only these 30 .tib files to any other location without the corresponding .xml files and catalog folder then will I be able to recover my data fully from these .tib files when the need arises without any issues?

Thanks.

1. No, you can't specify different archive name for differential backups. Default archive file naming was not designed to simplify manual copying of archive files. Usually the first .tib file with the name like (archive name)(date and time)F.tib is the full backup, but if e.g. network was disconnected during the backup process, full backup will be continued in the next file ending with "F2.tib"
2. You can skip catalog folder and .xml file and recover from .tib files only, but if you need to continue backing up to the same archive (e.g. after loss of the primary copy), you need to copy .xml file too.
