Domain Controller Restoring ok but won't boot

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have a Windows 2008 R2 domain controller which I backup daily. The backup works fine and restoring that backup on the same ESX Host works fine. I'm testing restoring to our disaster recovery host but, while the restore appears to go fine, when I try to boot the restored server, it goes straight into the recovery mode and nothing I do there seems to make it bootable. Differences between the source and desintation are:

Differences between source and destination
Source Destination
HP Proliant Host IBM Server Host
vCentre 5.0.0, 913557 vCentre 5.5.0, 21893111
VMWare ESXi 5.0.0, 914586 VMWare ESXi 5.0.0, 914586

Looking at the logs, it appears that, during the restore, the fact that the underlying hardware is different is recognised by Acronis and Universal Restore kicks in. The only errors I see in the logs are a series of Information errors something similar to "Device 'Primary_ide_channel' detected. Error code 2000, Module 29". There are others like this about other detections such as "DisableHWUI_ID" or "ACPIAPIC_MP". After these infomation errors the job continues and looks to complete fully.

Can anyone suggest why I can restore without any problems in my production environment but the server won't boot when restored to the disaster recovery host.

Thanks

Paul

Hi,

Could someone from Acronis please take a look at this? My support contract has expired but I've filled in the renewal 'request for quote' form 3 times now but haven't received any response. I've phoned the UK number a couple of times and tried to get through to sales but the line just rings out and goes to voicemail (voicemail, on a sales telephone number??!!).

This is an urgent request so any input or ideas anyone can add to the mix would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Hello Paul,

Thank you for your posting! Take a look at the following thread, where a similar issue's been discussed.

Regarding the maintenance contract, have you submitted your request using the following form? Have you got a response?

Thank you,

Hi Ekaterina,

Thanks for your response. I'm not sure if this is quite the same. I'm able to restore the DC without issue on the same ESX Host, the problem occurs when I attempt a restore onto different equipment. The linked threaded refers to corrupt NTDS.DIT, but if this was corrupt, the restore on same equipment would have the same issues.

Regarding the maintenance, I finally received a renewal license and raised a ticket yesterday morning. Almost two days later now and haven't hears anything from Acronis so....

Regards

Paul
