Full Backup of harddrive with OS and programs to external hard drive

Thread needs solution

Plan only backing up the PC for my church only about twice a year. Data is not important on the PC, however recovery time will be to have access to programs. It has Windows 7. With Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5, would like to do a full backup (clone?) to an external WD 1TB drive, USB connection. Once that is done, that is it, unless needed. Then the question is how do I recover should hard drive fail (or someone has done something and just want to get back beginning)? Have tried searching and have not found the answer. Not sure if a bootable CD/DVD is created and then load and launch recovery from it and select from the external drive.

Thank you
Dale
