Need backup solution for 18 TB partition

Thread needs solution

I have inherited a Windows Storage Server 2008 r2 with a single 18 TB data partition.

I currently have about 3 TB in use on this partition.

Windows Server backup has a limitation that due to 2048 sector size, it cannot backup to an external USB drive larger than 2 TB. This has led me to invest in Acronis Backup 11.5 to enable me to backup the growing data needs in my 18 TB partition.

After much trial and error, and speaking with Acronis support, it has been determined that Acronis Backup 11.5 will require space for two complete backups on the USB drive. Current maximum capacity for USB drives is 4 TB, so the maximum size backup that I can replicate to a USB drive for offsite storage is a little more than 1.5 TB.

Acronis Backup 11.5 does not support writing backups to a "pool" of USB drives.

Can anyone suggest a solution to my problem?

I have thought of subdividing my backups by folder, and this could help, however, some folders are already nearing the 1.5 TB mark, and will need further subdividing soon. And a solution that requires 12+ external 4 TB USB drives is a tough pill to swallow.

At the end of the day, the 1.5 TB limitation is no better than the 2 TB limitation imposed by Windows Server backup. Indeed, Windows Server backup does support USB drive pools. Should I just uninstall Acronis and go back to WSB?

Is a 10 TB NAS box my only solution here?

Anybody have a suggestion?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, maybe you should backup your data on the server itself ( you have enough disk space ) and use the split option in the backup plan by specifying a maximum limit of 1.5 tb ( that will create 2 archives ) and use a simple script to move/copy the two splitted archives to the different 2 tb USB drives.
