[RESOLVED] mms.exe causes sleeping hard disks to spin-up every half hour

Thread needs solution

Hey there,

I am running into an issue with Backup & Recovery:

Every half hour, I can hear spin ups of my hard disks.
Apparently, these are caused by mms.exe trying to access a subfolder called \etc\issue on each drive. This can be verified using Sysinternals Process Monitor. Additionally this does not seem to happen when I disable the Acronis Managed Machine Service.

First of all, this is annoying since it causes my hard disks to spin up unnecessarily. They are powered on, after ten minutes they go back to sleep and after further twenty minutes the are powered on again.

Is this caused by any setting?
If not, any chance to change the behavior so that hard disks can relax and the workstation can save power?

Regards,
Andreas

Okay, cycle seems to be 20 minutes.
Also, it is not necessary that the folder \etc\issue is accessed, merely the drive root (e.g. J:\).

I haven't seen this behaviour reported before. I think you might need to rasie a support ticket with a copy of your Acronis system report.

Hello Andreas Schöneck,

Thank you for posting your question in our Acronis forum. I am happy to assist you.

I want to thank Colin B. for your support.

Can you please specify the used Acronis product and build? On which operating system this problem occurs?

Let me know if you need additional help please.

Thank you.

Hey Peter,

I am using Acronis Backup & Recovery Build 11.5.32266 on Windows 7 x64.

Regards,
Andreas

Hello Andreas Schöneck,

Thank you for your quick reply.

The reason for this is the SnapAPI driver, that analyses the drives. Unfortunately this could not be disabled.

I have forwarded your question to our product management in oder to address this issue.

If there is anything else, we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi,

thanks for your quick reply. I appreciate your fast investigation on this.

Hopefully this can be fixed, so I would recommend B&R to my company as a backup solution.

Thanks again and best regards,
Andreas

Hello Andreas Schöneck,

Thank you for your reply.

Is it possible to disable the period, where the drive shut down spinning? In power management you can set the time to never or very high (999). You can find more information here.

If there is anything else, we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi,

unfortunately, I want my hard drives to save power when inactive.
For me this is at the moment an issue not to use B&R (or at least disable mms).

Regards,
Andreas

Hello Andreas Schöneck,

Thank you for the quick reply.

Again, it is not possible to switch of this function at the moment. However, I forwarded your request to product management.

Is there anything, I can do for you? Otherwise I prefer to close this thread.

Please let me know your decision.

Thank you.
