Restore full backup as VMware workstation

Thread needs solution

I had a windows 10 machine that I did a full backup of. I then restored it as VMware workstation files. WHen I try to run this in VMware Workstation Player 12, I get an error regarding a missing MBR. How can I get around this issue? I'm running Acronis Backup Advanced 11.7.

When I did the restore, I selected the previously backed up disk and selected restore as a set of files - VMware workstation.

Hi Keith,

Such issues should be investigated with help from our support team. Normally the VM should boot. The MBR error may indicate improper active flag setting on the restored partition, but it's hard to say definitely without knowledge on source and restored machines partition structure.

There is one thing you can try:

1) Prepare an empty VMware Workstation machine with required amount/size of virtual disks

2) Boot this machine from Acronis Backup 11.5/11.7 bootable media .iso

3) Run recovery from the bootable media environment and restore your existing Windows 10 full backup (place it on some network share, which can be accessed from bootable media).

The above steps would do the same job as when you restore machine as set of VMware Workstation files, but this time you can properly control the partitions structure/disks amount in the target system which might've not been handled automatically in your original attempt.

Thank you.
