Restoring virtual machine with dynamic disk size results in huge VHD file

Thread needs solution

Hi,

e.g. I backup a Hyper-V 2008 R2 VM guest (Ubuntu 14). It uses a dynamically sized vhd file, it uses about 20 GB disk space, the "real" disk size under Ubuntu is about 250 GB.

The backup size of this VM is also about 20 GB.

When I try to restore this machine (e.g. existing or new VM), the new VHD file has a size about 250 GB, but the vhd type is set to "dynamic".

Please give me some information about this issue.

I am using Acronis Backup 11.7.44421.

Thank you

Nevermind, Hyper-V compression wizard reduzes it to 20GB again.

Anyway, it would be great if it would restore to the original (smaller) size automatically.

Hello Daniel

If the backup size is only 20 GB, then I assume that only the occupied space has been imaged. Have you created a backup using the Agent for Hyper-V or Agent for Linux installed into the guest OS of the VM? (if you want to create backup using the Guest-Agent, you'll need to switch to the different level when specifying the backup source - > Click on "Items to backup" and select Disks\Volumes if you want the Agent for Linux to perform backup, select "Virtual Machines" and the backup will be performed by Agent for Hyper-V).  A backup created at a hypervisor level also stores the virtual machine configuration. This configuration will be suggested by default when recovering the backup content to a new virtual machine.

Thank you,
