Slow restore from LTO-3

Thread needs solution

We are using ABR 11.5 to make backup of disks on tape. It is an HP Ultrium 920 SAS (Ultrium-3 SCSI). Testing the drive with HP tools there is an read- and writingspeed between 40 MB/s and 60 MB/s.

Backup task is working with round about 35MB/s. When we restore one or more files from the backup on the tape the speed has an maximum with 5 MB/s. Restoring an 6MB file will take over 30mins. The restore goes to an local drive on the backupserver.

Firmware and driver of the drive are up to date. OS is 2008R2. Its an dedicated backup server with no other jobs.

Hello Josef.

Could you please find in the logs words like 'Tape drive statistics' for recovery activity? Please write this message here.
Or you can observe for behavior of tape drive. Are there many seeks during recovering?
Disk backup does not store files secuentially but saves blocks of filesystem from first to last. And different bloks of file may appear in different parts of tape.
If there are a lot of seeks you can try option of restore "Use a disk cache to acelerate the recovery'. With this option recovery should be faster. It will collect all required blocks of filesystem into cache sequentially an then will recover file from cache on disk.

Best regards,
Alexander.
