SFTP flaw and does not seem to work

Thread needs solution

*I believe I previously placed this in the wrong forum, sorry about that. Hello, We are trying to connect to a S/FTP server. This server will allow plain FTP and/or SFTP connections. The FTP side works fine with our FileZilla FTP client. The FTP side works fine with Acronis B&R 11.5 The SFTP side works fine with our Filezilla SFTP client as well as CuteFTP using FTP or SFTP mode. The SFTP side FAILS when using the SFTP vault feature in Acronis B&R 11.5 Acronis will attempt to connect, we can see this in our logs, after about 1 minute it will ask for the username and password which is different than the FTP vault which first asks for a username and password. Upon entering the correct username and password for the SFTP portion another minute or so is wasted and again we are prompted for the username and password. I have verified that both the FTP and SFTP are working with several apps, even Syncovery, another backup program, has no problems reaching the same FTP/SFTP server. Any suggestions? There really seems to be a lot of parameter features missing for the SFTP client side within Acronis. Thanks

Hello John Doe,

Thank you for using our forum. I am happy to assist you.

For backup to an SFTP destination, please check the following:

  • Are the necessary ports open? (If the port number is not specified, port 21 is used for FTP and port 22 is used for SFTP.)
  • Have the port specified in the address for the destination?
  • Was a user created with the required privileges on the FTP server?

Please see online help for additional information.

Let me know if you need additional help please.

Thank you.

I am having the same issue.

I can connect to the SFTP server with no issues using several SFTP clients.

Acronis Backup however asks for the usernam and password repeatedly in an endless loop.

This was one of the main reasons that I purchased this software fro the the ability to backup to an offsite SFTP server.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having the same issue while using the SFTP protocol. It works fine with FTP but not SFTP. I cannot use FTP due to it's insecure nature (transmitts authentication credentials in clear text). This is a problem for me because I need to send secure backups from our on-premise equipment to a remote data centre. Any information on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Derrick

Hello all,

It's better to raise a support ticket for such issues, if all necessary ports are open and the target location is accessible under Windows.

Thank you,

Same problem here.

If so many users have this problem it might not be the users fault.

I also continuesly get the login window to enter user and password. SFTP connection doesn’t work.
FTP works, but it’s kind of a joke that the insecure solution works and the secure one doesn’t …

EVERY other SFTP/FTP Client (Filzezilla, Transmit, Cyberduck, …) and EVERY other Backup Software (Windows & Mac) works fine with my SFTP connection!!!

I own a license of the version 10 and I just installed the test version of 11.5. But all these errors that I get don’t convince me to buy this software.

Same problem here. Acronis Backup 11.5 and now 11.7 cannot connect to my sftp server anymore.  There was a time when it could, and it did for many years.

The sftp server is currently running OS X 10.11 El Capitan. It used to run OS X 10.10 Yosemite. The failures started for me when I upgraded to El Capitan, but it's hard to blame the mac when all other SSH/SFTP clients can connect without any issues.

Please fix this problem. It has completely broken my backup plans.

Hello all,

I've reported the issue to our development team. Could you please reproduce the issue and collect FTP logs. Please attach the logs to your post.

Thank you for cooperation!

The debuglogs folder is not generating after I reproduce the problem.

Also, currently, instead of the endless loops of entering credentials, which I have seen as well, I am currently getting error messages that say "The vault you have selected is unavailable at the moment. Select another vault." This message occurs whenever I try to specify the path to the vault being created. I am not sure what is needed to recreate the endless loop of entering credentials.

If I simply try to set the location for where to backup in a backup plan, after typing the sftp URL, the OK button rarely enables, and the green go button either does nothing (no response from click) or gives me the same error message as above (...unavailable at the moment...).

I have attached screen captures of the two areas where this problem occurs (Vaults and Backup plans and tasks).

I have also submitted the fault in December last year. I am STILL trying to get a resolution with Acronis.

Perhaps Acronis should spend even a fraction on the licence fees on proper support and testing rather than wasting all of our time.

I would like to know when Acronis is going to reimburse me for the several months of cloud storage I have already paid for but were unable to use.

I have had Ivan Belinsky from Acronis support on a remote session with my server today.

He has mentioned that there was an SFTP bug found and fixed 2 days ago.

We are gathering more information to see if it is the same bug or a new one.

I will keep everyone posted. Hopefully we are getting somewhere.

Same problem here. This original thread started one year ago. Why is it that Acronis has STILL not fixed SFTP support. This is brutal.

I cannot connect to my SFTP server with Backup 11.7. It keeps asking for credentials over and over. Other products like FileZilla connect perfectly.

Looks like the problem is fixed.

Acronis has given me a BETA version V11.7N_44190.

Should be rolled out in the next release version of software.

Where do you download this beta version ? I spoke to two different reps , had this escalated twice and no one mentioned a fix in a beta version as of today !!

Hi SS_blake,

I understand your frustrations. I was in the same situation for a very long time.

In general, Acronis software and their support are terrible. I don’t think Acronis do ANY testing of their software for release, I believe they use their end users as test dummy’s to find the bugs and gather the information.

I did however find one person there (Ivan Belinsky) that actually knew anything and was quite helpful.

I am now having another issue where the Acronis software aborts the backup when I have an SQL application selected.

It has backed up successfully for a while, and then one day, it magically decided that it could not find a database so it aborts the ENTIRE backup.

Acronis logged on and could not fix the issue so they said to disable the SQL application backup because the SQL database was backed up with the entire disk backup.

WOW, good support Acronis. (jk)

Below is a link to the BETA.

Hello all,

The root cause of the issue in every particular case may be different and the custom build, developed for a specific issue, can have no positive impact even if the issue looks similar at the first glance. I'd suggest consulting with the support team prior installing the custom builds: http://www.acronis.com/en-eu/support/contact-us.html

Nathan, I've checked your support case #02720425. The issue was related to the incorrect function of the SQL VSS Writer. We can not fix issues with VSS Writers, as it's the Microsoft technology. One of the workarounds would be to disable the faulty writer temporary in order to have at least a regular backup without VSS while the issue is under investigation.

Thank you,
