Thread needs solution

Good afternoon,

i have created two backup Jobs.

1. Full Backup every sunday.

2. incrementell backup every night.

The jobs are working, but the incrementell backupfile have mostly a size of 10GB. But the truth is, that the incrementell size from one day to the other day isn't 10GB.

I have checked the size of the disk with some tools and mostly the incrementell differenz is 100MB more or less.

Regards

Hans-Peter Meyer

Hi!

Thank you for your posting! Would you mind sharing some more details on your setup?
- what data is selected for backup?
- if it's a virtual machine, is the (Changed Block Tracking) CBT used for creating snapshots?

You can try to check why incremental backups are that large by taking the following approach, assuming that your backup type is a Disks & Partitions backup, not a Files & Folders one.

Mount your incremental backup image to a drive letter using the Mount option. Use a tool such as the TreeSize Free program to then check the file & folder sizes in the mounted drive letter and look for one or more which would give the very large difference in size.

One of the possible reasons could be regular OS updates. For example, C:\Windows.old folder on Windows 10 gets created whenever Windows does an upgrade (as for the Creator's update) then gets deleted automatically again around 10 days later, but would count as changes for your backup task. This folder can be very large, from around 5GB up to 20GB in size.

Having Windows Shadow Copies present on a system can also throw off incremental counters, I'd try excluding Windows Shadow Copy information from the backup and see if that makes any difference.
