Backing up a cloud server

Thread needs solution

Hi,
We have a number of Cloud servers (with Rackspace). They are actually running on VMWare 4. Some are in the private cloud and some public.

I need to be able to back them up to standard (local) network storage and of course I need to be able to restore them.

The catch is that we don't have any console access so we can only Backup and, crucially Restore, from within Windows.

Can we perform a full OS restore in this scenario?

Is Acronis able to support this scenario?

Thanks
Steve

 Hello Steve,

Thank you for posting. I will be glad to answer your question.

Yes, you can use Acronis Backup and Recovery to backup such configuration. Doing that you should keep in mind the following.

  • There will be no restrictions on backup operations as these are performed from running Windows and will use all the available network interfaces.
  • In order to perform system restore, the machine first has to boot into the Acronis Bootable Agent. There are different ways to do that:
  1. Starting the restore in Windows will reboot the machine directly into Acronis Linux, that will automatically restore the image from the storage (including network), and then will boot the restored Windows.
  2. You can boot your virtual server from PXE server into Acronis Bootable Media. Here you can use both Acronis Linux media or the Acronis Plugin in WinPE media. After that you will have to connect the console with the Acronis Bootable Agent in order to manage it. You can then restore the system from it.
  • File or Exchange IS restore will not require reboot and can be performed from running Windows as well.

Should you have other questions, let me know.

Thank you.

Hi,
I have one file server running Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise 32bit. I am backing up locally to an external hard drive using Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 . Yesterday, my firm accepted my suggestion to purchase the Acronis Cloud backup service as well. I purchased the 1.5TB and activated/registered the license on line. My problem is when I want to setup the cloud backup using the same software in the server, I get stocked in the "location" and it looks like is trying to connect or access the on line location. I have already tested the rpc.acronis.com 443 to make sure that the port is open and it is open. So, I greatly appreciated if someone could tell me the step by step instruction on how to setup the cloud backup. I have already searched the Internet and Acronis website. I followed what the data sheet of Acronis suggested but as I mentioned before I get stock in the "Location" part of setting up the backup.
Your assistance is sincerely appreciated
