Backing up Hyper-V machines sometimes working and sometimes not

If the message comes sporadic, please take a look into the Windows event log of the virtual guest system. If you find there errors or warnings, please try to analyze what application or system does produce this error. In most common situation the vss writer will be the source of this issue. Please see this article from our knowledge base.

I have exact the same problem. I'm using ABR 11.5 (Build 11.5.37613) on a Windows Server 2012 machine.
Every day other vm's are affected. My actions: chkdsk on the vm's and on the host, clear all snapshots (host and vm's).
Any other ideas?

If you want to backup an Hyper-V host, please ensure, to exclude the folders, that contains the virtual drives of the guest systems. Otherwise you may get the error, you described.

You need to install the Agent Core and Agent for Hyper-V on the host itself to backup the virtual guest systems. If you want to backup the host itself, then please exclude the folders of your virtual guests.

This issue is occurring because Acronis is unable to access the vm file for creating the snapshots.

I recommend you to run the backup job using domain admin and fully qualified credentials. E.G.

For example, given a device with a local hostname myhost and a parent domain name example.com, the fully qualified domain name is myhost.example.com. The FQDN therefore uniquely identifies the device —while there may be many hosts in the world called myhost, there can only be one myhost.example.com. In the Domain Name System, and most notably, in DNS zone files, a fully qualified domain name is specified with a trailing dot. For example,

somehost.example.com.

We also recommend you to specify FQDN on the Windows-Dienst "Acronis Managed Machine Service" in hyper v host.

following are the steps for changing Windows-Dienst "Acronis Managed Machine Service" credentials:

1.) Go to start --> Run --> services.msc
2.) Click on Windows-Dienst "Acronis Managed Machine Service"
3.) Go to properties
4.) Click on Log on
5.) specify FQDN domain admin credentials

Following are the steps to specify task credentials:

1.Select one of the following:
■Run under the current user
The task will run under the credentials with which the user who starts the tasks is logged on. If the task has to run on schedule, you will be asked for the current user's password on completing the task creation.

■Use the following credentials
The task will always run under the credentials you specify, whether started manually or executed on schedule.

Specify:

■User name. When entering the name of an Active Directory user account, be sure to also specify the domain name (DOMAIN\Username or Username@domain).
■Password. The password for the account.
