Backup 11.7 errore "required number of indirects decreased during extents fragmentation"
I don't know if I'm writing in the right place: I'd want to write in
Acronis Backup 11.7 (former Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5)
because it's my product but when I select "new thread" I cannot find it along the scrolling list of forum.
EDIT: I was able to move this topic into the right forum.
I try to describe the condition. First, I use bootable CD (extracted from latest release), Linux Kernel and Windows View.
------
Source data is a 500 GB SATA mechanical disk, with plain mbr partition table.
sda1 ext4 14.65 GB 11.22 GB free
sda2 extended
sda5 swap 4.88 GB
sda6 ext4 43.95 GB 30.67 GB free
sda7 ext4 43.95 GB 17.85 GB free
sda8 ext4 358.3 GB 73.6 GB free
------
I backup it with Acronis Backup bootable CD (.tib image is created on another SATA disk). This operation is completed without error (final verify of .tib goes fine too).
If I try to verify the .tib again and again later, it's still the same. Outcome is OK.
------
And now I want to restore that image onto a 500 GB SATA SSD empty disk (notice: the disk itself is working).
I select the disk inside backup archive ("disk" view, not volumes or files), select the destinatio disk and then I start the restore.
After more than one hour, the process fails with the error I wrote in the subject.
If I look inside the destination disk, I find
sda1, sda5, sda6 OK
sda7 corrupted
sda8 missing
What can I do about it?
If it can be useful, I can collect more error code. It's not easy because inside boot cd environment there is no notepad or similar, I'm forced to write down everything by hand.

Hello Valerio,
Thank you for your posting! This issue has been reported to the development team and the investigation is in progress. As the workaround you can mount the image and copy the data from the volume sda7 (if it does not contain an operating system).
Thank you,

So i tested in my lab.
With 11.5 no problem, no warning all vms partitions selected
With 11.6 no problem, no warning all vms partitions selected
With 11.7 is the problem !!! unbelievable...the new version has this bug !!!

Andrea: what configuration have you tried on? How many partition, and what the outcome?
I'll give a try with 11.6 version. Or perhaps I can restore the other partitions, and then copy by hand sda8 content with "cp -a" from a live cd.
I noticed that Acronis, when browsing disk images, show wrong free space size.
For example, about sda8 it shows "74 GB free". Seen from Linux, the same partition is 55 GB free.

At the beginning of this year I activated a manteinance contract, thinking that support could take care of this bug.
I wasted my money.
Help went on for some month, with some suggestion to find a workaround: instructions on how to create bootable media (completely unuseful: I've been creating bootable medias from years), "format destination disk with Acronis Disk Director Lite", "try universal restore, beacause your destination is SSD and backup was taken from HDD" "try to empty destination disk before restoring" "try to restore partitions instead of disk".
Nothing fixed the issue. I think it should be clear from the start that this is a bug that should be fixed working on code.
In the end, support said they couldn't help me because the case would have to be pushed to an upper level but I didn't have the required license. I have "Advanced Workstation", and they said that for getting support on restoring ext4 partitions I would need a "Server"! license.
This is surprising: I thought that "Server" was required to install and run software on a Linux installation, but not for a simple offline (from boot media) restore of previously backupped ext4 partitions. Neither I was talking about fixing lilo, I can fix it by myself...
If they cannot fix it for me, will they at least take note of the bug and fix it in future versions?
Who knows?

Hello Valerio,
I'm very sorry to hear about your bad experience. The team manager was alerted on the case and should have sent you an email with the further details. I've also noted in my post from 2016-09-22, that this issue is known to the dev team and current workarounds would be mounting an image or reverting back to the previous builds. According to our internal rources the fix is still not implemented.

I don't know what "previous build" you were talking about. How much previous?
In the meantime, I did the job with other software. I used clonezilla for a simple clone, leaving partitions unchanged (They were not aligned on MB units.), and then I aligned partitions one by one with gparted boot cd.
Now that the partitions are aligned, if I take an image with Acronis then I am able to restore that image. Without workarounds or multiple steps, simply as it should work.
So I suspect that something is broken in the management of alignment during restore of an unaligned source.
I'm going to try (on the old un-restorable image, just to see if it works) with latest 12.5, but I fear the bug has not been fixed.

Hey!
I'm experiencing the exact same issue. For me it probably started happening after shrinking a disk on the affected virtual machine. Reinstalling the agent on the server did not help.
Are there any other solutions to this problem than starting to tinker with the partitions?

Hello Ivar,
The issue is still unresolved: currently ext4 partitions are not recovered properly, if resize or similar operation is required. I'd suggest raising a support ticket for this issue, so that our engineers can take a look at the diagnostic information and involve development if needed.

Do you mean resizing in general? Because we've increased the disk size many times with no problems. The error saying " required number of indirects decreased during extents fragmentation" only appeared after shrinking a volume.
I must say I'm very unimpressed by this and many other things in Acronis. Why would this still be a problem after reinstalling the acronis agent AND starting a new backup schedule with a new backup archive?

Hello Ivar,
the mentioned issue affects recovery of ext4 partitions that require resizing due to different partition layout on the target drive. I see that you've already opened a support ticket for this issue. Would you mind sharing the outcome here? If any assistance is needed, please let me know.
