Centrally Managed Backup to Removable Media?

Thread needs solution

We are running Acronis B&R Virtual Edition on a "management server" to backup a number of virtual servers running on ESXi 5. The management server has locally attached removable media that we would like to back up to. We have a single backup plan that contains 3 virtual servers and they back up to an unmanaged vault.

We have been encountering problems occurring when we rotate the drives - the backups fail, indicating it can't find the archive. After working with tech support, I was told that this scenario is not possible. The only way to backup to removable media is for the backup media to be local to each virtual server and the backup plan must be defined at each virtual server, which completely defeats the idea of centrally-managed backup.

So my question: how is everyone handing removable backups? I am curious how other's are implementing this strategy with the B&R Virtual Edition version.

Bill

Hello Bill Unger,

Thank you for posting this question in our forum. I am happy to assist you.

When using a removable device as backup location, please see this section in our user guide: Removable devices.

Limitations:

  • Centralized vaults cannot be created on removable devices.
  • Vaults created on removable devices do not have the Data view tab.

I recommend for backing up virtual machines to use not removable devices as first backup destination.

If you need additional assistance, please create a system report of the affected machine and contact support. You will find all available support options in our Customer handbook.

If there is anything else we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.
