Comparison between Acronis Backup and Recovery for VM and Acronis Backup for VM (VMProtect)

Thread needs solution

Hi,

could anyone from the mods point out the main differences between these two products? We are thinking to switch to a different product which supports backup to tape, and currently VM Protect 9 does not support backup to tape. There are other vendors like Symantec Backup Exec which supports Tape Backup.

We saw that Acronis B+R for VM supports backup to tapes. What are the main differences between Acronis VMProtect and Acronis V+R for VM?

Do you offer a crosscrade from Acronis VMP to V+R?

Thanks

Hi ece,

Acronis Backup for VMware has the following main features which are not available in Acronis Backup Advanced version:

1) ESXi host configuration backup. No analogue.
2) Run VM from Backup. No analogue.
3) VM replication. Advanced version can save backups and convert them to VMs (so there is no direct VM replication, but it can be done with backup archive as the middle stage)
4) Application-aware VM backup. Advanced version includes separate application agents (included in the Virtual license), thus allowing to back up application data separately.

The Advanced version on the other side has the following advantages:

1) Backup to tape
2) Physical machines support
3) Centralized management of multiple appliances
4) Reporting

There is an upgrade path between these 2 products and you can contact our sales team at http://www.acronis.com/en-us/enterprise/sales/ to perform this operation. Note that technically these products are completely different, so there is no way to migrate configuration between them.

In the next version of Acronis Backup (12) we will merge the 2 products into single platform so that Advanced version includes all features from non-advanced edition and there was a simple upgrade path between them.

Thank you.

Hi Vasily,

thank your for your comprehensive comparison and overview.

Can you roughly estimate when the version 12 will be available?

I assume this also means that there won't be a VM Protect version 10, correct?

Hi ece,

We plan to release the 12th version this year (2015), but I'm not allowed to tell the exact timeframe yet (I can tell that it should be much earlier than the end of the year though).

The vmProtect project will be merged into 12th version (so there won't be vmProtect 10) and all existing users of Acronis Backup for VMware (former vmProtect) with active maintenance contract will be eligible for free upgrade of course.

Thank you.
