Email notifications via gmail smtp server (port 587) fail test
Hi.
I've had a backup task sending backup notifications via email working properly for ages and, suddenly, notifications have stopped working.
My configuration is as follows:
- SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
- Port: 587
- User name and password: double and triple checked (they're the same that use to work before)
- From: same address as username
- Use encryption: TLS
- Log on to incoming mail server: unchecked
When I try to send a test e-mail message I obtain the errors "Failed to send the message from 'xxxx@gmail.com' to 'yyyy@gmail.com' (SMTP 'smtp.gmail.com:587')" and "Failed to connect to the mail server.".
Changing the port to 465 and encryption to SSL works today, but didn't work last week.
I wonder if this may be related: https://security.googleblog.com/2015/09/disabling-sslv3-and-rc4.html.
I'm using version 11.7.44421.
Does anyone know if I have to make changes to my configuration? Some obscure setting in the registry, perhaps?
Thank you.
Cheers,
mprost

Hello mprost,
Thank you for your posting! I would suggest checking the following:
- POP support in gmail account settings should be ENABLED. To enable POP go to your gmail account and choose POP Enabled in Settings.
- "Allow less secure apps" option in Google account settings should be ON. To enable it log into your Google account and modify corresponding option under "Sign in & Security" settings.
- Make sure the selected port is available using telnet from the machine in question to the SMTP server on the port that you use
- Make sure that you are really using correct settings for the SMTP server. For Gmail please refer to their support pages such as this one Gmail settings for Mail Clients.
If the issue still persists, please follow the guidlines from this article and contact our support team for deeper investigation.
Thank you,

Just a quick line in case somebody else is suffering this problem. Just as announced here (http://googleappsupdates.blogspot.com/2016/06/gradually-disabling-suppo…), in June 17 port 465 and SSL encryption stopped working, so now there's no way to send confirmation messages from Acronis Backup 11.7 using Gmail servers.
