Excluded folder path (Exclusion) did not apply to correct partition and Exclusion failed.

Thread solved

Hi,

I have an XP HDD that I added Ubuntu to later. I allowed the Ubuntu installation to retain the XP installation and the Ubuntu install used Grub to create a Ubuntu/XP dual boot setup. The Ubuntu installation accomplishes this by shrinking the XP partition, then adds an extended partition after XP, installs Ubuntu into that extended partition, and lets Grub handle the boot mechanics.

The XP partition/volume contains the usual "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\" folder. That folder (and its subs folders) gets backed up regularly via another backup mechanism so I wanted to Exclude it from the Acronis full disk image. To do this I added (no quotes) "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\" as an Exclusion in the job setup.

HEADS-UP NOTE: I wasted nearly 3 hours on the first backup attempt, only to learn the very hard way that SINCE v10, the Acronis Help fails to mention the important fact the TRAILING BACKSLASH IS REQUIRED and the backup will run to 100% completion and then throw a warning that the backup failed. I fail to understand how the contents of https://kb.acronis.com/content/2849 continue to elude the documentation team. But anyway . . .

The image should have taken maybe 15 minutes and should have been around 25GB. Instead, the image ran for 2 1/2 hours and the tib was 110GB. I knew immediately that the exclusion had failed. Sure enough, there's a warning in the Log:

Humm  . . . It looks like Acronis Backup thinks XP's "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\" folder is in the Ubunu/Linux swap file partition.

Here's a Gparted pic of the HDD:

And to add to my confusion, here's how Acronis Backup sees the HDD (notice Acronis it calls XP's 131.2GB NTFS partition "C:" (ie. like the C that I used in my Exclusion path) :

Does anyone know why Acronis Backup looked at the 15.84GB Ubuntu/Linux partition for  XP's "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\" (no quotes) ?

Sorry for the elongated post, but I wanted the problem to be understood to the best of my ability to describe it. I look forward to any comments or workarounds.

Regards . . .

Ok, I found the fix for this.

Acronis, imho you should have known how to handle this.

Ta-ta!

@babab

Hello, I have the same issue! How did you manage to solve it?
Thank you for any help

First image the disk, but don't include the XP partition (ie. in "What to backup" deselect the XP partition's check box).

Second, image only the XP partition. The Exclusion of (e.g.) My Documents will work now.

You end up with two images to manage, but at least the Exclusion feature works this way.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

I know it's been a couple years, but I found another idiosyncrasy with the "Exclusion" path.

If you're using the Linux based boot CD, you have to think Unix. That means no (ala Windows) backslashes (ie. "\") in the path, but instead use (ala Unix) forward slashes (ie "/").

And . . . still remember to end the path with either a slash or backslash (as just described above). HTH : )

P.S. Hey Krtek, if you're still following this thread, how about marking my 7/27/17 post above as solution? Thanks in advance.

P.S. Looks like Acronis added a bit about the \ . I posted a tip (at the url mentioned in my OP above) to update their doc to include the Unix / .
