Hangs on backing up SBS2008 C:\ after locking partition

Thread needs solution

I've seen similar post to this behavior but no resolution:

I have 3 backup plans. One for a file-server, one for our exchange server and one to backup the SBS2008 C:\ drive (where Acronis is also installed). All work except the one that backs up the C:\ drive. It indefinitely hangs upon locking the partition. There's no error code to post because we have to restart the server to exit the process and have Acronis functionality working again.

Setup:
VM Ware 5.0.0, 469512
SBS 2008
Forefront 2010 for Exchange
Acronis build 11.5.32266
All backup plans write to the same location: a USB SANS device

Again, the other two backup plans work without flaw. There's no virus protection on the server C:\ drive except Forefront for exchange.

I was hoping someone would have some ideas.

Backup plan and system info attached.
Thank you in advance!

I also wanted to comment that I did submit an email request for this issues as well but I also wanted to engage the community for their experience as well.

Thanks again.
PS

I had countless problems with all of my servers when i upgraded to ABR11 and now on to 11.5

I couldnt get backups to be consistent, sometimes they would just lock up and i couldnt get them to stop without hard booting my servers. Generally this is not an option in a production environment.

So i started thinking about what the problem could be. In my case, I was backing up over the network. So i did the following and it solved my problem 100% of the time...

Disable the following on the NIC properties under device manager...

Large Send Offload V1 & V2
Receive Side Scaling
TCP Connection Offload (IPv4 & IPv6)
TCP/UDP Checksum Offload (IPv4 & IPv6)

Basically you are turning of the TOE on your NIC. TOEs are a worthless technology that just causes problems. ESPECIALLY with extremely large file sizes and transferring them over the network.

EDIT: I guess you are not backing up to a network location though...

Are you doing an image of the C drive ? (backup disk 0, or 1, or whatever) or are you doing a file level backup?

also your application event log is not happy about your SBSMon SQL instance... several hundred per day. You may want to look into that as well.

I also see that you are running 32266 you should upgrade to 32308. I did when I was having some strange issues and it helped a lot.

Thank you for the post and suggestion.

I actually have Acronis installed on the same C:\ drive of the server which it's hanging on when backing itself up.
I am backing up to a SANS device which is connected via a SATA cable to a separate PC (over the network).
All backups are being placed on this SANS device so I would expect the other two plans to fail as well if it was a TOE related problem.

I might try this anyway just to be sure.
Acronis support mentioned yesterday it's an issue with SharePoint.
Still on hold for a resolution.

Thanks again for the suggestion. I do appreciate it.
