Licenses that cannot be used for this machine
Team,
I'm trying to create a bootable media with universal restore option but it didn't accept the license key which i entered. Because of this "Universal Restore" option has been greyed out. I've attached the warning message for your reference. Please help on resolving this issue.
Product Details - It's Standalone product - Acronis Backup and Restore 11.5 with Universal Restore option for Windows.

Saravana

According to the second screenshot - you use license for version 11 trying to install version 11.5. Is it the only license key you have?

Hi Fedor,
Thanks for your response.
Yes, i've only one license key & I'm not sure whether it should be used only on ver 11.
Let me try using this license on 11 and ll update this forum.

Nope, it didn't work. I'm getting the below error message -
"Failed to check the license key. Either the key is invalid or it cannot be used for this edition"
Details:- Code: 13,238,273 (0x00CA0001)
Module:- mms_us_32308
Message: Failed to check the license key. The key is disabled.
Kindly let me know what should i do next? Thanks!!!

May be this key is from an Advanced edition. I'd suggest contacting support as it's difficult to solve problems with particular keys in a public forum.

Just a thought but could it be possible that the license key that you are using is an upgrade license key?
If that's the case then you require the original V11 license keys & the upgrade keys.

Rightly said Stewart.
I've two keys. One for version 11 and the other one for Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5 Server for Windows Upgrade + Universal Restore.
What i've done was, uninstalled 11.5 from the 1st server and installed 11 with the license key & i was able to create an .iso image successfully and then created this as a bootable image using Power ISO software. Afterwhich, i was trying to restore the image on a raw server (only RAID-1 has configured)
& it went up to the 2nd screen (Select OS and other options) since it doesn't run with any OS i was not able to proceed further & i'm forced to come out of that screen.
I thought, using the bootable image i can make the raw server up and running. I think, i'm wrong here!!! Please let me know.
So, i've installed the Windows 2008 R2 Std - 64bit (Same as 1st server where the image created) on a second server and then tried with the bootable image (created on 1st server) but this time nothing has happened. It went to the OS straight away though the CD/DVD ROM option is first in bootable order.
You have any idea what i did wrong here? OR what are the steps to be followed to restore the image on dissimilar hardware perfectly.

This is regarding the license - Can i upgrade Acronis 11Std to 11.5 on the existing server? If yes, do i need to supply the 11.5 upgrade license key while upgradation? Kindly let me know.
Thanks in advance!!!

I'll answer your last question first as this is easier - YES you can upgrade to version 11.5 on the existing server if its currently running v11, and you will have to supply the upgrade license key.
As for your first part there are a few questions that i need to know beforehand.
1. When you installed V11 on the first sever again, which license key did you use, the original V11 one or the upgrade one and does the original V11 license key also have the universal restore option.
2. When you successfully created the bootable media from V11, was the option to use universal restore available to you prior to creating the image file?
3. The problem with restoring to new dissimilar hardware is that you need to have all the required drivers, especially the raid controller drivers already on the bootable image cd that gets created from step 2 or the bootable CD won't be able to see the drives to restore your image too.
4. This bootable image that you've created, does it also contain the data that you require to restore, or does this just include the Acronis Bootable media to enable you to restore an image from an offline location.
You should be able to create a bootable media disk that will load a standalone copy of the acronis software from CD and from that you should be able to point that to an image file on a local resource or network share to restore onto the new dissimilar hardware.
The steps that i use to recover to dissimilar hardware are as follows.
1. Create bootable media on server that already has acronis software installed - at the point when asked to use universal restore then select that option, at the point where it asks if you want to load any additional drivers then i point it to a folder that has all of the drivers that are required for the OS of the new dissimilar hardware. This will ensure that the correct drivers are injected into the bootable media in preparation for the restore.
2. Create an image on the network or removable media if small enough of the server you wish to replace.
3. Once complete, make sure that the new server either has network access to the image created at step 2 or it has access to the removable media, insert the bootable cd into the new server and make sure that the bios of the server is set to boot from CD first.
4. If all going well then the CD should boot and you should get 2 options on the splash screen, load acronis or boot into OS, take the first one, this will load the acronis software from the cd.
5. All going well and the software loads then you should be able to take the restore option and then select the appropriate image from the network / removable media, then select a destination drive (new server) and take the option to use universal restore. If you can't see the new drive then you don't have the correct additional drivers installed from step 1. (in this case you need to create a new bootable media trying different drivers).
6. All going well the server image will be restored and a reboot will be required, if all the drivers have been loaded correctly then the server should boot up ok
Any questions just ask.
Duncan.

Hi Duncan,
Thanks for your swift response. My answers are inline.
I''ll answer your last question first as this is easier - YES you can upgrade to version 11.5 on the existing server if its currently running v11, and you will have to supply the upgrade license key - Thanks for the clarification.
As for your first part there are a few questions that i need to know beforehand [DS]
1. When you installed V11 on the first sever again, which license key did you use, the original V11 one or the upgrade one and does the original V11 license key also have the universal restore option - I used the original V11 license key. Yes, it supports universal restore option.
2. When you successfully created the bootable media from V11, was the option to use universal restore available to you prior to creating the image file? – Yes.
3. The problem with restoring to new dissimilar hardware is that you need to have all the required drivers, especially the raid controller drivers already on the bootable image cd that gets created from step 2 or the bootable CD won't be able to see the drives to restore your image too – I’ve included all the necessary driver .inf files (RAID, SAS/Harddrive, NIC) while creating a bootable image hence i don't think that i need to specify the path for drivers. Am i correct saying so?
4. This bootable image that you've created, does it also contain the data that you require to restore, or does this just include the Acronis Bootable media to enable you to restore an image from an offline location – Actually the size of the Acronis image size is 375MB & burned it on DVD & then booted the second server. I’m really not sure whether it contains all the essential data that I require. How to check whether i do have all essential data for universal restore option? What will be the ideal size of the Acronis image when you create it on windows 2008 R2 Std – 64 bit edition? Just curious to know, what are all the information/data will have the Acronis image?
You should be able to create a bootable media disk that will load a standalone copy of the acronis software from CD and from that you should be able to point that to an image file on a local resource or network share to restore onto the new dissimilar hardware. [DS]
The steps that i use to recover to dissimilar hardware are as follows. – Let me also try these (your) steps tomorrow and will let you know the outcome. Do I also need to have Acronis software installed on second server to restore the image created on 1st server? Kindly let me know.

Afterwhich, i was trying to restore the image on a raw server (only RAID-1 has configured)
& it went up to the 2nd screen (Select OS and other options) since it doesn't run with any OS i was not able to proceed further & i'm forced to come out of that screen.
It looks like you pressed 'Apply universal restore' button on the start screen. It works only with an existing OS, if you need restore from backup you should click 'restore'.

Yes Fedor, i pressed "Apply Universal Restore" button & now i can't choose 'retore' option as i've installed the OS on the second server. I tried booting a server with Acronis image on (2nd server) Windows 2008 R2 - Std 64 bit edition but it's directly goes in to the operating system & it didn't bootup from Acronis image which i've created on 1st box. In-fact i've mentioned about this issue while replying back to Duncan inturn he had asked few questions and replied back to him with the answers.
