Media is write protected

Thread needs solution

We have installed Acronis 11.7 Advanced for Hyper-V for our third customer, and with that one we have our first problem.

Neither formatting nor backing up is possible, since we get  the error message "The media is write protected", which is definitely not the case.

Acronis runs on a Windows 2012 R2 server. The tape device is an IBM Ultrium 5 HH 3580 with latest drivers installed, i.e. no hardware issues are shown in the Windows device manager.

What can we do here? Hopefully someone has some inputs. Thank you!

The log entries (in German, sorry):

Hi,

have you checked another tape, it may be a defective tape 'Montag' (found here).

The tapes are not new (used before for Veeam backup), but we have that effect for all the tapes we tried so far.

I'm just formatting a tape in Veeam and try again. Tomorrow we will try an Acronis backup with a brand new tape.

I just wanted to check if there are possible/known problems with e.g. the tape device or something else.

In fact there is a known issue with some drivers, but it returns in a different error message:

47126: Acronis Backup Advanced: Backup to Tapes Fails with "Incorrect function"

Your IBM ULT3580-HH5 is listed in HCL, so it should be supported (57237: Acronis Backup Advanced: Acronis Hardware Compatibility Tool for Tape Devices section Usage, 7.).

Yes, the error message is different.

Good to know that the tape device is listed in the supported devices' list :-)

Let's see what the backup on a completely erased or new tape results in.

Ok the solution seems to be:

In Veeam we had to free and completely erase (not the short version) every tape. Then backups were possible without any errors in Acronis.

Thanks for reporting your solution!

I have seen some discussions about similar errors when using the other way round (Acronis written tape in another product). I looks like the products are using different header sections. It should be added to the FAQ when using used tapes to fully format them before use in Acronis products.
