New to Acronis. Best RHEL install on a Scale cluster.

Thread needs solution

I have a new Scale HC3 Cluster with 3 nodes. I am now installing Acronis RHEL on the fist VM. I'm looking for a document that would address the best way to set up the Acronis s/w on the 3 nodes. I plan on a mixed Windows / Linux VM environment. I also have a 2 host VMWare setup that I want to include in the future as well as end user PCs.

The first big question I have is, Do I install the full product on each Scale node or have one Main Management VM with a subset on the other 2 nodes?

Hi John,

The Scale HC3 Cluster has KVM hypervisor running as the backend. For this type of hypervisor Acronis provides agent-based backup solution and single Acronis Backup Advanced for RHEV/KVM license can be used to install agents on unlimited number of VMs running on RHEV/KVM. The typical recommended setup is to have 1 backup management machine where you install Acronis Management Server (AMS). After that you can perform remote installation of the backup agents onto VMs which need protection - both Linux and Windows machines are supported for remote installation (connect to AMS from the Management Console -> go to "Machines with agents"-> click "Add multiple machines" button). It doesn't really matter which exact cluster node will be running the VM where you have AMS installed - you can use any of the available nodes.

Thank you.

How do I gain access to the Scale VM files so I can backup the Scale cluster environment? I am assuming that if I connect to one node, I have all the files that are used to run and control the cluster environment???

Hi John,

The backup management in setup I described above will be performed from inside the VM (in its console opened in Scale HC3 interface or via RDP) by running Acronis Management Console and connecting to Acronis Management Server (AMS). The other machines running on the cluster will be protected by backup agents running inside them (these agents will be registered on AMS after you install them). If I correctly understood the Scale HC3 cluster provides interface for managing the VMs (create/delete/modify/etc.) across entire cluster and thus there is no need to connect to each node separately.

Thank you.
