The process cannot access the file becoause it is beign used by another process

Thread needs solution

I have been using Acronis Backup for maybe two years now and have to-date no issues with it. Recently, however I have migrated all of my data to a Synology NAS and am coming across a problem that previously I had not experienced.

I am performing weekly incremental backups from the NAS to an external WD drive . On each occasion the process stops and requests 'interaction'. I receive the following messages:

Error Code 0x40019 'Access to the file is denied'
Error code 0x40014 'The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process'
etc.

Now, the backup as a whole is functioning otherwise correctly but the above messages occur on a selection of seemingly random collection of files. Files types range from .png, .jpg & .xls . If I select the 'Ignore all' button on the pop up window the backup continues apparently seamlessly. My problem is that I am unsure now of what is being backed up and what isn't!!

I am assuming that there is some kind of issue with the Synology v Acronis relationship but being a humble photographer and non-techy it is all beyond me. If someone has a recommendation for fixing this I would be most grateful!

Many thanks All!

Hello Phill,

Thank you for your posting! Unfortunately it's an expected behaviour. Network shares are backed up only on the file-level, therefore no snapshots are created before backup, which means that files in use will not be backed up. We recommend scheduling NAS backup for the time when files on the NAS are not in use. For more information please refer to the following article.

Thank you,

Hi Ekaterina,

many thanks for your kind assistance, but perhaps what I failed to mention is that the files being flagged by Acronis are not in use! Frustratingly, if I leave the backup over night, without any files being in use, the backup will simply stop and await my input with on the popup dialogue (i.e whether to retry, ignore etc.)!! These files are erroneously being flagged as in use when they are not. It s not an insignificant number of files either, on my last back up it must have missed many hundreds of jpg files that were simply not in use! Somewhere along the line there is a serious issue that must be fixed.

What do you think? Thanks for any further light you may be able to shed on this issue, it's very frustrating.

Hello Phill,

I've discussed the issue with our development team to provide you with more details on the algorithm our software uses to detect that files are in use. We try to access the file through Windows APIs and the file is inaccessible with an error code that corresponds to “file is un use” (the file is locked) I would suggest to reboot NAS if possible and then test if backup is performed without warnings. I've also found the following threads which may help you:

Find out who is locking a file on a network share: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/581219/find-out-who-is-locking-a-fil…
If nothing helps, please contact our support team for deeper investigation.

Thank you,
