Universal Restore project with Questions

Thread needs solution

I intend to restore old Windows 10 pro to new  upgraded hardware currently operating with a temp. Windows 10 pro.  Old hardware had a failed mobo and also required new components to match new mobo.  Old Win 10 system backup is Raid0, mbr, and was backed up with Backup 11.7.

I intend to restore to new hardware with same OS, but with UEFI and single basic C: drive.

I currently have all the “key” sys files (searched the new Device Mgr.) and copied the *.inf  versions of the *.sys files to a folder on the external drive where backup files reside.

I intend to keep the “machine ID” of the backup when restoring so as to indicate that all my existing software is going to new hardware, not an additional machine.

I plan to use the Linux build as recommended, rather than the PE method, because I’m going to the same Windows 10 pro OS.

I will validate the backup files.

Questions:
1) Can this hopefully work, even though backup file is over a year old?

2) I will have to install the Acronis program on the new system to make the bootable media.  Should I use Backup 11.7 or upgrade to 12.5 to make bootable DVD w/Universal Restore?

3) Should I also plan for accessing a copy of the entire Windows\INF folder, copied from the new Windows 10 system?

4) When I select backup files, should I also include small system partition (mbr) even though I’m going to want to ultimately select UEFI during universal restore?

5) Do I need to do anything special about Raid0 being part of old system, since I’m targeting a single basic drive?

6) What else do I need to do before building the Universal Restore media?

Thanks,

Ralph Nielsen (sailor76@comcast.net)

Hello Ralph,

welcome to Acronis forums!

Please study the step-by-step instruction on how to prepare for recovery and all restoration steps in the respective KB article https://kb.acronis.com/content/35681

1) Can this hopefully work, even though backup file is over a year old?

Yes, if validation passes Ok.

2) I will have to install the Acronis program on the new system to make the bootable media.  Should I use Backup 11.7 or upgrade to 12.5 to make bootable DVD w/Universal Restore?

Yes, in order to create the bootable media with Acronis Universal Restore you will need to have Acronis Backup Bootable Media Builder to be installed on the machine. This could be any machine. You will need to specify your license when creating this media in order to include Acronis Universal Restore on it. Otherwise, it will be created in a trial mode without Acronis Universal Restore component. Moreover, you can download Acronis Bootable Media w/o Universal Restore from your account as described here: https://kb.acronis.com/getmedia

We recommend that you use the latest available in your account build of Acronis Backup 11.7 for Acronis Bootable Media creation. For more information on how to create such media please refer to this chapter: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/AcronisBackup_11.7/index.html#1230.html

3) Should I also plan for accessing a copy of the entire Windows\INF folder, copied from the new Windows 10 system?

Your Windows/INF folder could contain not all of the required drivers. All you need is to prepare a folder with *.inf, *.sys or *.oem drivers for your new disks and chipsets (as the most critical drivers for starting your new system, the other drivers could be installed later) and make sure that it is accessible when you boot your machine with Acronis Bootable Media.

Please consult the Preparation part of the mentioned above article for more details: https://kb.acronis.com/content/35681

4) When I select backup files, should I also include small system partition (mbr) even though I’m going to want to ultimately select UEFI during universal restore?

Yes, you will need to select this small system partition in order to make the target system bootable even if you want to switch to UEFI on the new system. Please consult the respective chapter in the documentation on how to do this conversion: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/AcronisBackup_11.7/index.html#14022.html

5) Do I need to do anything special about Raid0 being part of old system, since I’m targeting a single basic drive?

Nothing special is required on this.

6) What else do I need to do before building the Universal Restore media?

Please consult the Preparation part of the mentioned above article for more details: https://kb.acronis.com/content/35681
