Backing Up Clustered Virtual Hosts - HyperV

Thread needs solution

I am having a terrible time with Acronis Backup 12 (AB12).  I have three virtual hosts clustered together.  AB12 shows all three of them and their VMs in the list, I am able to apply plans to each of them, but the backups continue to fail.  After a month of hounding Acronis Customer Support about it, I am being told their product cannot backup clustered Virtual Hosts.  Is this really the case?  I asked this question specifically before purchasing it, and I was told we would be able to back them up with no problems.

Any suggestions on how to remedy this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lee,

Hyper-V slusters are fully supported by Acronis Backup 12. In the support case #02919055 which I've discovered (please confirm that this is the right one) I've found that the jobs are failing due to VSS failures on the host (VSS error 0x80042313: The shadow copy provider timed out while flushing data to the volume being shadow copied. This is probably due to excessive activity on the volume.), e.g. the host volumes could not be added into VSS snapshot. The solution (which seems to have caused confusion) suggested by our support team there was only for cases where VMs have disks located on both CSV and non-CSV volumes - this is a known Microsoft limitation according to their KB

The Backup Monitor component installation is definitely unrelated and installation of it is won't solve the original issue, which should be troubleshooted with help from our support team. The root cause of VSS failures should be revealed first, e.g. check whether the problem is reproduced only for specific VMs, is it reproduced constantly or only from time to time + check the Windows event logs from the Hyper-V host to check for VSS failures which may give more clues.

Thank you.
