Inquiry about Acronis Backup 12's features

Thread needs solution

I have several questions to see if Acronis Backup 12 is suitable for our backup plan.

- Purpose : Server backup via network

- Server : Windows server 2012 R2, 64bit, Raid 5

- Question

   1) Acronis Backup 12 product covers Raid 5?

   2) Can I back up to an external HDD, which is connected to another PC via network?

e.g.) Windows server 2012 ---- (Network) ---- PC - (USB) - external HDD <- We are going to backup here

Hi Kim,

When Acronis Backup 12 Agent for Windows (that's the main component responsible for backup) is running inside the protected machine, then the RAID configuration does not matter, since the data is read through native OS drivers (plus Acronis SnapAPI file system driver) and therefore there are no compatibility issues as long as the OS itself recognizes the RAID properly. The RAID support does matter when you need to perform bare-metal recovery onto new or similar hardware and to do so you'll need Acronis Backup 12 bootable media (created with Acronis Bootable Media Builder component installed by default). This media is based on Linux and supports various RAID configurations including RAID-5 where there is an open-source version of Linux drivers for particular RAID controller and thus we can inject them into the media kernel (most modern hardware is already supported). If there are any hardware recognition problems with the default bootable media, then there is always an option to create Acronis Backup 12 WinPE-based media and inject the required RAID controller drivers into it.

Concerning your 2nd question - yes it is possible to back up to a network share which is located on a USB drive connected to remote machine. There should be no problems here.

Thank you.
