P2V Windows 2000

Thread needs solution

I have a Windows 2000 Server physical box that I would like to P2V to Hyper-V 2008R2. Are there any current products that will virtualize Windows Server 2000 sp4 to Hyper-V 2008R2? Any gotchas or tutorials that people can recommend?

Thanks!

Hi Edward,

While no current versions of Acronis products officially support Windows 2000 the scenario you describe can still be done. Acronis Universal Restore in practice still supports Windows 2000 so the migration process can be done as follows:

1) Use Acronis Backup 12 or 11.7 bootable media to boot Windows 2000 box and capture backup of it (you won't be able to perform online backup, since backup Agent cannot be installed on Win2k)

2) Prepare a VM with empty disks on the hypervisor. Remember to create a VM with virtual hardware supported by Windows 2000. For example on ESXi there must be LSI BusLogic SCSI adapter used (LSI SAS won't work).

3) Boot the prepared VM using the same Acronis Backup 11.7/12 bootable media and perform recovery of the backup captured on the 1st step. Apply Universal Restore (there is such option in recovery wizard) and provide the drivers when prompted.

There might be some problems after recovery, for example you may need to re-install NIC drivers, but the VM must be bootable after all.

Also note that the trial version won't allow you to accomplish the above-described scenario, since trial bootable media doesn't allow capturing backup (it allows only recovery).

Thank you.

Edward,

Such scenarios evaluation can still be done, but not on self-service basis. I've asked our support team to contact you and assist with the process (to get a full version for evaluation).

Thank you.
