Really EVERY Host ?

Thread needs solution

Hello,

we've installed Acronis Backup 12 for testing purposes and have one question:

when you select to install the vmware appliance per default it wants to install one appliance on every host it founds through vcenter. but is this really necessary ? we have a cluster consisting out of 4 hosts and all hosts have access to the same datastores. With Acronis backup for vmware we need only one appliance to backup all vms in this cluster.

There is no need to install AB12 appliance on every host, you can use just 1 to backup vm's from all hosts connected to your VCenter, you still need license for all the hosts.

Hi,

While it's not obligatory, general recommendation is still to have appliance on each host for backup load distribution among them, e.g. from performance perspective this setup is better than having a single appliance, especially for scenarios where VMs are hosted on local datastores  - in this case single appliance will read backup data over network (NBD mode) instead of Hot-add backup mode when backing up VMs from different host.

Thank you.

Hi,

I understand that the Hot-add backup mode ist faster than the NBD mode and we see this in our tests. But in our environment we have no vms hosted on local datastores. they reside all on fc-san. so i think one appliance for every cluster we have (at the moment 2) should be enough and enables every appliance to use the Hot-add backup mode. Or what do you think ?

Best regards Sven

Hi Sven,

Yes, correct, if the VMs are on shared storage (shared datastore) connected to all hosts in cluster, then a single appliance per cluster will be enough to perform all these VMs backups in hot-add mode - in your case it would be 2 appliances (1 per each cluster).

Thank you.

Hi,

thanks then thats the plan ;-). Another question: Is there a document in which the differences between Acronis Backup 12 and the upcoming Advanced Edition are listed ?

Best regards Sven

Hi Sven,

There is no such list available in public yet, but I can say that the major difference will be in tapes support + advanced deduplication functionality. The additional details will become available closer to Beta release.

Thank you.
