12.5 Build 10330 : Where is the VSS option gone?

Thread needs solution

Hey there,

I did a clean reainstall and changed my 12.5 9010 to 12.5 Build 10330 (HF3.1).

I´m now wondering what happened with the VSS options.

My "Default backup options" are set in the following way:

Build 9010:

VSS_Default_Options_B9010.png

Build 10330:

VSS_Default_Options_10330.png

You see: They are the same.

Now I tried to create a new backup plan from the scratch.
Therefore I created a bunch of screenshots of the settings in the old syste and try to do the same setings....well....The VSS page in Build 9010 of a plan looked like that:

Opts9010.png

And in 10330 this page looks like:

VSS_Opts_10330.png

?!?!?!?
Where are the radio buttons to select ?
The plan is a Disk/Volume backup.....

Any ideas ?

I now had a chat with support and got the following information:

- The radio buttons are removed by incident.

- The settings in the Backup Plan Default options (there are the radiobuttons) are valid globally for all (!) plans.

- Development is working on using only Microsoft Snapshots in future versions of Acronis Backup.

- As the Microsoft Snapshot is necessary for Backups of SQL and/or Active Directory (recommendations in the documentation), the only useful setting is "Use Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider".

- The remaining text ( "Automatically select among the hardware snapshot provider, software snapshot providers, and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider.") in the individual options of a backup plan is a GUI bug !

- The user guide does not reflect these changes and may be misleading as the VSS options seem to be individual options but not all of the options are individually selectable.

- Also the Release Notes do not reflect these changes.

No comments from me on these issues as it´s more and more stressfull to work with this product in a real-life business.

Hello Sven,

thank you for your posting.

Indeed, starting from U3 the radio buttons for selection of VSS providers in individual backup-plans was removed.

I will pass your feedback to our development.

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Hi,

I'd like to add some comments here:

In our practice there were quite a lot of incidents where improper choice of VSS provider caused backup malfunction and thus frustration. The "automatic" selection choice always fixed such issues - the logics behind it is the following: first detect VSS providers applicable to backed up volume -> first try hardware VSS provider if present -> next try software VSS providers (Microsoft VSS Provider) -> next use Acronis VSS Provider (in most cases it's not used). Therefore in Acronis Backup 12.5 Update 3 our original intention was to leave "automatic" VSS provider selection always enabled in GUI, and for backward compatibility add ability to make custom VSS provider choice through custom patches (which is required very very rarely as we thought).

However after getting feedback from our customers we've discovered that forcible usage of specific VSS provider is not that rare as we believed, so we are going to return the option in Acronis Backup 12.5 Update 4 and Acronis Data Cloud starting from v7.8 (which is in Beta currently).

Thank you.
