Acronis 12.5 Backing up ONLY the Physical Host or the Physical Host AND the VM's???

Thread needs solution

I have been a 10Year+ user of all things Acronis, thanks for a great product all these years! I had previously been running Version 9, Version 10, Version 11 but it's been a few years since I've had to roll out a brand new project. I am now starting fresh with Version 12.5 Standard. I have a Server 2012R2 with two HyperV VM's. I am doing an onsite backup along with an offsite backup (pushed through a VPN) and I am trying to understand the pros and cons of backing up ONLY the physical host or backing up the physical host AND choosing the VM's also. The issue is that because the offsite is internet based, speed is important, so if I only backup the Physical Host, will that still get me everything I need, including the VM's in a crisis? When I add the VM's to the backup task, am I essentially backing up the VM's twice (once from the host backup and once from the VM backup)? I am trying to eliminate moving any more data offsite than I have to to allow the backups to fit in the overnight schedule. Any help would be great.

Hi,

Please see my recommendations in the following thread which describe the possible concepts: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/acronis-backup-125/best-practise-backup-one-hyperv-host-3-vms

In short: you can either backup entire Hyper-V host including all data (and VMs), but without ability to recover only VMs without restoring entire host OR backup Hyper-V host with "File filters" option enabled and VMs separately in 2 different plans.

One more tip here is that if you store your VM disks on a Clustered Shared Volume (CSV) then backing up Hyper-V host won't include these volumes as they may not be properly snapshotted and will likely be skipped (depends on availability of VSS writer to support CSV volume).

Thank you.
