Is adding backup device of Vmware vcenter or vmware host cause changes to the vcenter or vmhosts

Thread needs solution

We have deployed a Acronis Backup Appliance VM (12.5 build 10330). Before we add our Vmware vSphere 6.x hosts or vcenter to Acronis devices, we would like to know

(1) when add/remove either vcenter or vmware host to backup devices, will it cause any disruption

(2) will it will install or make any change to our Vmware infrastructures

(3) what is the different between adding Vcenter or Vmware vsphere hosts?

(4) we have vSphere 6.0 and 6.5 located at three different Data centers with single vCenter appliance (6.5) and we have total of 15 hosts. Do we need to configure Acronis backup appliance at each data center or each host? (we need to avoid backup data sending across data center)

Thanks,

Aldous

Hello Aldous,

As far as I understood you have deployed All-in-One-Appliance.

(1) There is no disruption after the backup agent is connected to vSphere (when you go to Devices->Add->ESXi host). There are read-only operations which retrieve information about vSphere infrastructure (VMs, datastores, etc.) using standard connection on 443 port - same as used by vSphere client.

(2)  there are no changes in vCenter after agent registration

(3) The difference is in the amount of managed instances. If agent is connected to vCenter, then it also handles VM migration across vSphere cluster for example, which is not possible if you connect agent directly to ESXi hosts.

(4) you need to deploy Virtual Appliance in each Data Center. In your case it would be 3 Appliances (usual ones - not All-in-One-Appliances).
Please keep in mind that installation of Appliance on each Host is not necessary but it can boost performance as the load during backup will be spread over many Appliances
