Always incremental. Few quesions.

Thread needs solution

1. Is it safe ?  :)

2. I see that I have in the chain First full backup from 3 months ago. And i have incremental backups over last month (retention rules ).   So there is a hole between full and  actual incremental backups. - is the consistency retained?

3. I am  concerned that firs full backup becomes older and older. it a procedure to sometimes renew full backup in the same chain?

Hello Marek,

using Always incremental scheme (and hence Version 12 archive format) is not only safe, reliable and effective, but also the recommended way to store backups. You shouldn't worry about 2) or 3), because data in this type of archive are stored differently as compared to the old format 11. All backups are saved as blocks into a single archive. When a certain backup (recovery point) expires due to the retention rules, the outdated backup blocks are marked as “free” ones. All newer backups will be written into the “free” blocks first, and only after all the free blocks are filled, the archive file will grow in size again.

Could you please clarify,  when backing up to the cloud there is no reason to rerun the 1st full backup, even after months have gone by?  And as the cleanup occurs, even though information is being deleted, all incremental changes are saved?

Hello John V,

welcome to Acronis forums!

When you back up to cloud, the first backup is always full and all subsequent backups are incremental. They all are combined in a single archive by adding new portions of data (incremental backups) to the existing data blocks (first full + previously created incrementals). Thus, the data from your full backup is always there.

When retention (cleanup) rules are applied to the backup archive of this type, the entire archive is scanned for duplicated data blocks inside which are being cleaned to optimize the archive size. Thus, the archive contains the full backup data and all the changes that have been made to this data after.

If you need to rerun a new full backup, we recommend that you create a new backup plan for this job.
