Assign license

Thread needs solution

Hi,

we're running Acronis Advanced 12.5 and we have several Acronis Workstations licenses already added to the management server. Most of them are not used.

In case we have a virtual machine running Windows Server 2008 R2, can we use a Workstation license for that machine?

Does Acronis Management server applies automatically the licenses you have depending on the OS of the machine that is added to the server?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

To protect a VM running Windows Server 2008 R2 you need either "Server" or "Virtual Host" license. The "Virtual Host" license should be assigned to the hypervisor host where this VM runs on or it can be assigned directly to this VM if you install Agent for Windows/Linux inside it. The "Workstation" license won't be sufficient.

The licenses are assigned automatically depending on the protected guest OS version, if the most applicable license is available, so it practically works in 99% of cases. In some specific cases the license needs to be assigned manually: for example if you have "Virtual Host" license and install Agent for Windows/Linux into some server OS, then this license won't be assigned automatically (you'll need to do it manually) since it's more expensive license than the "Server" one and therefore it must be conscious/manual decision to perform such assignment.

Thank you.
