Cloning a machine

Thread needs solution

I am using Acronis Backup 12.5 (Advanced); new user. So I guess the first question should be,  "Is what I am trying to do valid?"

We have machines that came pre-loaded with Win7. I have taken one of them and upgraded it to Win10. The intention is to now use a backup of this machine to clone the others. I have successfully:

  • Created the backup in an Archive on our server.
  • Created a bootable DVD using "Bootable Media Builder"
  • Booted to the DVD on the target machine
  • Launched "Recover"
  • Navigated to the Vault and selected the Backup

Here's where it gets interesting and here are various attempts I have tried:

  1. In the "Backup Contents" pane, selected "Volumes"; selected "MBRs|Disk 1". "Where to recover" selected "Disk 1". The result is it creates a Recovery Task and reports "Succeeded" after 1 second. Obviously, not what was expected.
  2. In the "Backup Contents" pane, selected "Volumes"; selected "MBRs|Disk 1"; selected "Basic|System;WINDOWS (C:);Data (D:)". "Where to Recover", selected "Disk 1" for "MBR"; selected "C:" for "System"; then was at a loss.
  3. In the "Backup Contents" pane, selected "Volumes";  selected "Basic|System;WINDOWS (C:);Data (D:)". "Where to Recover", selected "C:" for "System"; then was at a loss.
  4. In the "Backup Contents" pane, selected "Disks"; selected "Disk 1". "Where to recover" selected "Disk 1". This resulted in an error message: "Target disk is already occupied".

At this point I'm sure that ignorance on my part is in play. Either I am trying to do something invalid or I am missing something. I am wondering if I need to reformat the target first, or will the Recover process do that? Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Don,

The easiest way to accomplish scenario is to choose the 4th method you tried ("Backup content"->"Disks") - you won't need to worry about mapping of volumes in this case, since you'll be restoring only one disk to another. Most likely you got the "Already occupied" error because you tried to select the target disk which was already automatically selected as target in "Where to recover" section of the recovery sheet. In other words you could've just pressed "Start recovery" button without further adjustments. It's hard to guess without some screen shots though.

Thank you.
