Consolidate Incrementals

Thread needs solution

Hi everybody,

We're changing a lot of backup procedures these days and we are implementing Acronis in certain systems for Files and folders backups.

If I am not wrong, with Acronis 12.5 format, when you create a FULL backup, 1 file is generated, then all the incrementals are created within that file...

  • When is another file created to host the incrementals? Only after the next full?
  • Is there an option to consolidate all the incrementals?
  • Is it feasible to have one full per year and then a daily incremental? (I think there's no way to have less than 1 full per year)

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Regards

Hello No No,

thanks for posting your question on Acronis forums!

  • When is another file created to host the incrementals? Only after the next full?

A new .tibx file is created with every new full or differential backup. All subsequent incremental backups depend on it.

  • Is there an option to consolidate all the incrementals?

I recommend that you read the following explanation on how consolidation works with Version 12 backup format:

If version 12 format is used, and multiple backup chains are present (every chain being stored in a separate .tibx file), consolidation works only within the last chain. Any other chain is deleted as a whole, except for the first one, which is shrunk to the minimum size to keep the meta information (~12 KB). This meta information is required to ensure the data consistency during simultaneous read and write operations. The backups included in these chains disappear from the GUI as soon as the retention rule is applied, although they physically exist until the entire chain is deleted.

  • Is it feasible to have one full per year and then a daily incremental? (I think there's no way to have less than 1 full per year)

You can set the scheduler to create only 1 full backup per year. However, this scheme is not reliable: if this full backup got corrupted, you will lose the whole backup chain which could be your backups for almost the entire year.
