Difference between Acronis Backup Server and Acronis Backup Workstation

Thread needs solution

Hello,

Can someone tell me the main difference between the server and the workstation version of Acronis Backup 12.5?

Is there a difference in the amount of features or is there a restriction in terms of the operating system where I can install the software? (Maybe the setup does not allow to install a workstation version on a windows server OS ?)

I'm wondering about the big difference in price and want to know the reason.

Thanks for your help

Best regards

Alex

Hi Alex,

The difference between "for Server" and "for Workstation" licenses is only in the list of supported operating systems where the backup agents can run: for "Workstation" this would be Windows XP SP3 and higher desktop Windows OS versions.

P.S. The list of supported features differences between "Standard" and "Advanced" licenses (which both can be "for Server" and "for Workstation") can be checked here.

Thank you.

Hi Valerio,

"Workstation" type of license for Acronis Backup 12.5 supports only desktop Windows editions: Windows XP SP3 and higher. All Linux OSes can be licensed with "Server" license only. See additional details in this KB article.

Thank you.

We have Acronis workstation advanced license and backing up many PCs remotely using management console. Can this be used to backup disk on a sever running "Windows Server 2016" OS?

How do you know if the Acronis 12.5 version of software you have downloaded is "Advanced" Workstation or not?

Hi Mumtaz,

A "Workstation" license cannot be used to protect servers.

Also the Acronis Backup 12.5 software package is a single one - there are no separate installation packages for "Server" and "Workstation" or "Advanced"/"Standard" - all types of licenses can be imported via web console interface (or synced from Acronis account) in Settings->Licensing section. The license of corresponding type will be automatically assigned to each machine registered in Acronis Backup management server, depending on type of guest OS which this machine runs: "Workstation" licenses will be assigned to Windows XP...Windows 10, and "Server" licenses will be assigned to Windows Server 2003...Windows Server 2016.

P.S. The "Advanced"/"Standard" licenses define the difference in available operations (not the type of guest OS where this license can be assigned to).

Thank you.
