Feature Request: Restore to VM in Management Console & Issue: oversize VM restore

Thread needs solution

The ability to restore to VM is present within the Management Console, but it only allows you to target a virtual host such as Hyper-V or ESXi. This is quite limiting compared to the Recovery Media in which you can restore and convert to VM files in any disk location directly from the backup.

I also had an issue restoring a particular VM and it was running out of disk space. It seems to be setting the volume size using the original volume size instead of just restoring the data to a new VDISK of any fixed/variable size. Again, I think the restore targeting/sizing options could be improved for both VM's and disk targets.

Thanks.

Hello Craig,

welcome to Acronis forums!

it only allows you to target a virtual host such as Hyper-V or ESXi

Either you can recover a backup to a new virtual machine.

This is quite limiting compared to the Recovery Media in which you can restore and convert to VM files in any disk location directly from the backup.

This is true if your VM runs Linux. Acronis Bootable Media is also based on a Linux kernel. That is why we can easily restore/convert to VM files in any disk location directly from the backup. However, this is not that simple for a VM that runs Linux to operate with its backup in the Windows environment.

It seems to be setting the volume size using the original volume size instead of just restoring the data to a new VDISK of any fixed/variable size.

When recovering to a new machine, please click Disk mapping to select the datastore (storage), interface, and provisioning mode for each virtual disk. The mapping section also enables you to choose individual disks for recovery.
