Keep getting "Windows error: (0x8007001F) A device attached to the system is not functioning" on simple Windows 7 C: backup

Thread needs solution

We're trying to backup an older Windows 7 PC that is running some lab equipment. We just need a C: drive snapshot, but everytime we run a backup we get a "Device not functioning" warning. There are no USB drives connected to the PC, only a USB WiFi adapter and a serial port device.

We're running the latest 12.5.12210 client. Any clues as to what might be causing this?

Hi Doug,

The error is thrown by Microsoft VSS while creating the VSS snapshot (Acronis Backup triggers VSS snapshot by calling Microsoft VSS) and there should be corresponding events in Windows Event Log on the machine which need to be checked and analyzed for further investigation (see example). Once VSS starts functioning properly on the machine, the backups will also run good.

The workaround would be to disable Volume Shadow Copy option in Backup Options, so that there is no dependency on Microsoft VSS during backup creation. Note however that such backup will be in crash-consistent state (which means that after recovery from such backup the system will be booting from hard shutdown state for the first time).

Thank you.
