Moving backups to another storage node

Thread needs solution

Hello, I want to move backups from one storage node to another. Are backups portable? I have copied 'computers' and '.meta' dirctories to new storage node, than i register the new storage node in management server. When i tried to add location with my data i received error message: The location is currently managed by storage node 'D906A9EB-A3CE-409B-ACCB-F8E2C219E3C4'. If you attach it to '. backups directed to 'D906A9EB-A3CE-409B-ACCB-F8E2C219E3C4' will fail. What should I do now? I have completely no idea.

Hello Oscar,

thank you for posting on Acronis forums!

The problem here is that every vault (Storage Node) has its unique ID that is written in the metafiles. When you move the vault - the IDs were not changed and the old vault with that ID is still registered in Acronis Management Server where it is hosted.

So if you want to migrate the vault to another Acronis Storage Node that is registered on the same Acronis Management Server and remove the old vault, then this method can be used. You will need to remove the old vault before attaching a new one in order to unregister it from Acronis Management Server. Otherwise, you will receive the error that it is already registered.

If you want to store the backup on two vaults that are managed on one Acronis Management Server, then the best variant is to use replication option:
- if you have an advanced license, then the replication plan can be created. It should allow you to copy the backups from one vault to another and set up different retention rules to keep the backups on the second vault: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/AcronisBackup_12.5/#38952.html
- in case you have a standalone license, then the second storage option can be used in the backup plan. This option is also available for Advanced version. Please refer to the following chapter in the User's Guide: https://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/AcronisBackup_12.5/#38846.html

In the first variant, you can specify the time when the backup replication will start. In the second variant, the replication will start after a backup creation is finished. Please keep in mind that first time it will replicate all missed backups (or last one if this option is chosen).

Thank you.

Hello Maria,

I have other case. I want to move (or just copy) a vault between Storage Nodes under different Management Servers.

Maybe I can manualy edit Storage Node ID somewhere in metadata. Does Acronis support this action?

Hello Oskar!

It's not advised to manually modify those files, however you don't have to.

If you have deduplication see this thread: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/acronis-backup-125/migrate-125-advanced-dedup-vaults-new-servers

If not: https://kb.acronis.com/content/61149

As Peter has correctly answered, it is not recommended. However, you can open a case with Acronis Support Team and request a remote session so that expert support engineers could manually edit these data.
