NFS or CIFS/SMB is recommended with VMware backup appliance

Thread needs solution

Hi, we are using Acronis backup agent for vmware appliance and backup to our NAS. our NAS supports both NFS and CIFS/SMB. I understand that Acronis supports both but which one is recommended? OR what are pros/cons/limitations?

regards,

Aldous

I couldn't say for sure.
I would suggest try both and see which 1 has the best performance (if that is possible).

Hi,

The choice between NFS and SMB/CIFS depends on your preferences and how good both of these protocols are supported by particular NAS device. One concern here could be related to fact that some NFS servers (especially running on NAS devices) do not properly support NFS locks on files, which makes it working inconsistently if you save backups in new (default) backup format v12 where all data is kept within one file and it is updated during incremental backups (hence locks are required to keep backup data consistent). Basing on it I'd recommended to stick to SMB/CIFS as it's more transparent and doesn't have such hidden caveats as NFS servers could impose.

In terms of performance there should be no big difference.

Thank you.
