Using too many tapes

Thread needs solution

Hello there,

i am using Acronis Backup 12.5 (latest version) to do manually (not planned) backups to additional tapes on weekends. The daily backups go to starage system.

I am using a tape library with to drives. There a plenty of usable tapes in the "Free" pool.

Now i manually start the jobs ant first start with the "big" ones, like Exchange DB, Fileserver, SQL. Then i start all the other backup plans (about 15) all at once. I do not use a single plan because i can not start a single machine if one out of the sets fails due to usual acronis failures.

In the plan definition i choosed the option "leave tape in drive when finished".

The question ist, why does Acronis Backup not efficiently use the tapes and complete the tapes first, before using "new" ones?

At the end there are lot of tapes with plenty of free space. (See attached image).

Thanks for your help.

Frank

Hello Frank,

please check in Settings -> System Settings -> Tape management whether the Use tape sets within the tape pool selected for backup box is unchecked:

Hello Maria,

thanks for your reply. The mentioned option is unchecked. Nevertheless acronis is setting this value to some of the tapes.

As i understand, deactivating the option means, acronis is using ANY tape for backup and not just only the ones with a matching tape set.

Am i wrong? Do i have to set this value to one value like "Weekend backup"?

Thanks

Frank

Hello Frank,

The mentioned option is unchecked. Nevertheless acronis is setting this value to some of the tapes.

On the screenshot you shared in your first post "full" does not mean that this tape is full, this is such a custom rule for tape sets that someone set in System Settings -> Tape management. Thus, it could not be unchecked.

The question ist, why does Acronis Backup not efficiently use the tapes and complete the tapes first, before using "new" ones?

As you have mentioned, you have two tape drives and start about 15 backup plans in parallel. Thus, all these backups are being written to different tapes at the same moment.

As i understand, deactivating the option means, acronis is using ANY tape for backup and not just only the ones with a matching tape set.

I need to clarify this with the experts. Will post a reply as soon as get an answer.

Hello Frank,

As i understand, deactivating the option means, acronis is using ANY tape for backup and not just only the ones with a matching tape set.

When the tape set option is specified, then tapes marked with it can be used only by the backup plans that are set up to back up to the tapes with the "Use tape sets within the tape pool selected for backup" enabled (the correct tape set should be specified in this backup option). These tapes cannot be used by other backup plans where another tape set can be specified or if this backup option is deactivated.

The tape set can be removed from the tape if you open Acronis Consol -> Settings -> Tape Management -> Tape Pools -> then choose the required pool -> choose the tape and then choose the tape set option.

The tape set option is required to back up to a specific tape.

When there is no tape set specified, then any tape is taken which is not marked by a tape set.
