Using VM Replication

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

I am using the VM Replica feature for moving servers. Once the replica is complete, my plan is to delete the original. Is there anything wrong with this? I see in the Acronis console the replica VM shows as a replica, is there anything I need to do to make this this "new original"?

In the Acronis Management Console if you click on Devices / All Machine and select your VM_replica and choose Replica actions on the right hand side you will see a number of replication actions, one of them being 'permanent failover' which will convert it from a replicated VM to a regular VM.

I definitely did not use this feature correctly. I ran the replication, turned off the original, powered on the replica, and everything was functioning as it was supposed to be. it has been a few weeks since doing this. I noticed the snapshots were still there, so I removed the snapshots.

I'm wondering if I can still run the "failover" and "permanent failover" options since I did not use these features correctly? The servers are online and operating like an original.

Hello Sam,

thank you for the post! Cw1972 is right; you need to perform “failover” first, before you can apply the “permanent failover” feature. It will convert replica to a regular virtual machine. This operation is possible only when replica is already in "Failover" state.

I hope this answers your question.

Thank you all so much for your answers! It has been really helpful in me understanding how to use this product for replication failover. I was able to use it successfully on future VMs.

I did have to go back and fix the others, which are in a bizarre state because I deleted the original AND the VM snapshot. I opened a ticket with Acronis and they pointed me to this article

Your answers in combination with this article has resolved my issue and prevented me from making the same mistake again. Thanks!!

Thank you for feeding back, Sam!

Hi Jerico,

If you haven't created any replicas yet, you need to click on Devices / All Devices, select a device you want to replicate and then the Replication option on the right hand menu will be available for you to configure your replica.

See my screenshot.
