ABR11 uses MS VSS and Oracle VSS by mistake and crashes database

Thread needs solution

Dear Acronis Support,

ABR11 uses Oracle SID VSS Writer Service - but is not configured to use this Service!

Details on our servers (Acronis clients):

  • We are using Windows 2008 R2, Oracle 11 RDBMS, SAP NetWeaver 7.xx and the ABR11 agent on the Acronis clients.
  • Disk 1 is a local disk with 2 partitions (C:\ and D:\), SAP and Oracle are installed to iSCSI disks (F:\ and G:\).
  • The Acronis backup contains only the local disk (C:\ and D:\).

We’ve upgraded some more of our servers to ABR11 to figure out, if the problems of Case#01314244 are caused by older ABR10 agents.

After upgrading 23 of our servers to ABR11 agents, some of them (6 out of 23) received memory problems! The affected systems used more than 95% of available memory. This occurred directly after starting a backup with Acronis and on one of our SAP systems this caused the Oracle Database to crash:

  • ERROR: Unable to normalize symbol name for the following short stack (at offset 2)
  • ORA-04030: out of process memory when trying to allocate 64544 bytes (sort subheap, sort key)).

Acronis is configured to use the System Provider for VSS, Oracle installs an own VSS service: “Oracle SID VSS Writer Service” which starts up automatically at Windows start and consumes about 12 GB of memory after Acronis starts and ends the backup of the local disk (this should not affect the database, because it is located on an iSCSI disk!).

As a workaround we’ve disabled the “Oracle SID VSS Writer Service”, but this problem only occurs since we’ve upgraded to ABR11 – there have been no problems with ABR10, ABR Echo or previous releases.

Regards
