Acronis Migrate Easy 7 issues related to upgrade from 120 GB Hitachi to 500 GB WD 2.5 " HD's

Thread needs solution

I just purchased (November 12, 2009) Acronis Migrate Easy 7 as I upgraded the HD in my IBM X61 laptop. The laptop has a 120 GB Hitachi HD, while the new HD is a 500 GB WD HD.

I created the CD boot disk with Acronis Migrate Easy 7 and booted up the laptop from a the boot CD and then ran the disk clone. I used the automatic transfer mode with the original 120 HD in the laptop and the new 500 GB hooked up via USB. Both drives were recognized and the 120 GB HD was selected as the source and the 500 GB as the destination disk.

The process finished after about 1.5 hrs with no error messages. I then shut the computer down, took the new 500 GB HD out of the USB External 2.5" case, removed the 120 GB HD from the laptop and replaced it with the new 500 GB HD.

I then powered up the laptop, hit F1 and reset the start up sequence so that the new HD was first.

I then saved the settings, the computer screen went blank and then came up with a disk read error, restart using ctr-alt-del.

I have tried restarting several times and triple checking the BIOS settings to ensure that the new HD is first as far as the start up sequence goes. The drive is recognized in the BIOS.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Kelly

Hello Kelly,

I am familiar with the issue you are experiencing and will do everything possible from my side to provide you with the reliable solution.

If you have decided replace the hard disk of your laptop with a new one, you can use Acronis software to do the cloning. The important point to remember is that you need to put the new drive in the laptop first, and connect the old one via USB. Only after this you may do the cloning. Otherwise you will not be able to boot from the new cloned drive. Please see this article for more information.

Please let us know the results, we should be sure that the program runs flawlessly.

If the issue still remains, please plug the new hard drive to your laptop, download Acronis Report utility available here and run it, create a report and attach the file to your next post. Please compress the Acronis Report output file into an archive (e.g. with WinZip) and attach to your message by browsing for the archive. This would provide us with detailed information on the hard disk partition structure.

Please let me know if the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question.

Thank you.
