Acronis Not Flushing Exchange Transaction Logs

Thread needs solution

We just took over a client that is running Acronis Backup and Recovery 11.5. It appears that they have the Advanced Server for Windows License enabled. We noticed that the exchange transaction logs are not being cleared by the backups. I looked and there is a backup job that takes a full backup of the exchange server. However, they aren't using the exchange agent. Does the exchange agent need to be used so that the backups are exchange aware and purge the logs? I also noticed that in the backup logs for this server, I am seeing two warnings:

Failed to create snapshot of volume E

Failed to take a VSS snapshot.

Could either of these errors be the reason that the exchange logs are not being purged?

Hi David,

You should use the Agent for Exchange directly in the Exchange VM. During a "Full Backup" transaction logs will be truncated, this can be done only via the Agent for Exchange. See Transaction log in documentation.

Please follow the 36200: Acronis Backup: VSS Troubleshooting Guide for more details how it works and why you get these VSS errors. Feel free to ask if you need additional assistance.

Hello David,

To add to what Raphael mentioned, you can also use a regular disk backup and have the logs truncated through VSS.

In order for this to happen, enable the "VSS Full Backup" preset, as described here.

Note that VSS does have to work correctly for this to happen.
