AcronisAppliance fail to statup in VMware ESXi 5.1

Thread needs solution

Dear Support,

as a hardware problem (already replaced the HDD), i need consolidation one VM virtual machine.

Before consolidation, i remove one snapshot from that VM virtual machine and shutdown the AcronisAppliance

After consolidation, i fail to poweron the AcronisAppliance with below error

Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/51375c99-24a9e19c-f506-6cae8b1f7552/guest1/guest1-000002.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

guest1-000002.vmdk should be consolidation VM machine file, not AcroncisAppliance.

any suggestion for this?

Do i need remove all the log in AcronisAppliance to clear previous error?

please advise.

Thank you.

Sun

Hi Sun,

According to your description the following happened - the VMs were backed up by appliance in hot-add mode, so the backed up virtual disks were attached to appliance. Then the appliance was turned off and the snapshots of the backed up VMs were consolidated which caused the disk paths to be updated. Therefore appliance tries to start up, refers to old paths of the attached virtual disks (the backed up VM disks) and fails to start when it cannot find it.

You need to remove these paths from the appliance configuration as described in the following KB article: https://kb.acronis.com/content/32611 . It refers to a different product, but the concept is exactly the same: edit the appliance from vSphere client->remove the attached disks references (there must be only 2 disks left: 1 and 2/4GB in size).

Thank you.

Dear Vasily,

Seem to be the case you mention

in my screen capture, the existing acronisappliance has disk 3, disk 4, disk 5 created which link to a deleted vmdk

so the solution is i click "Remove" for disk 3, disk 4, disk 5, right?

then startup the acronisappliance, it should return normal

Thank you for your advise.

Rgds,
Sun

Hi Sun,

Yes, these disks from other VMs must be removed from appliance configuration. Make sure you do NOT remove them "from disk" - just remove them from configuration (that's the default choice in vSphere client when removing). Also the appliance local disk number may be 1 + 6 in your case, since the 2nd disk is connected to SCSI 1:0 slot while backed up disks are normally attached to SCSI 0:X - verify the disk location path before removing it.

Thank you.

Dear Vasily,

Thank you.

Acronis VM appliance startup normally after remove disk 3,4,5

But scheduled backup face another error again

The task haltup at around 7% after 4mins the task start, same status over 24hrs, then i cancel it

Task messge show

Error code:46

Message: Forced sector-by-sector mode.

Error code:22

Message: Block bitmap is corrupted.

This time i alllow it to cancel and remot the snap shot, seem the acronis appliance is normal this time

For backup error, the error relate to VMDK file?

Do i need to run chkdsk drive: /r to repair the windows file structure?

Seem it is the same as last time.

From kb.acronis.com/content/36993, i have no idea which solution should i take?

any advise?

Thank you.

Sun

Hi Sun,

The "Forced sector-by-sector mode." message doesn't seem to be the root cause here. The task is likely to fail on disk hotadd event, when the backed up virtual disk is attached to appliance. Looks like here there is something wrong with the disk attachment to particular appliance. I'd recommended to try to deploy a fresh new appliance and try backing up the same machine via connecting to this appliance directly from Acronis Backup management console.

Thank you.
