Advanced Server SBS Edition

Thread needs solution

I've been searching everywhere for this information and cannot find it, so I'm asking here:

Traditionally, when a backup software package is sold for SBS you get everything included to back up SBS - meaning the OS, Exchange, SQL Server, and all the workstations that join the domain.

Nowhere in the Acronis documentation (that I can find) does it state what licenses or agents are included in Acronis 10 Advanced Server SBS Edition. Nowhere does it state what parts of SBS you can actually backup.

Do I have to buy a additional licenses for the workstations? Do I have to buy an additional licenses for Exchange and SQL Server?

It lists all the cool things Acronis 10 can do, but it doesn't say what you actually get for your $500.

Hello Lynn Wilborn,

Thank you for posting your question. I will be happy to help.

For each additional workstation you will need a separate license. Although Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 Advanced Server Small Business Server can create backups with complex applications such as Exchange and SQL, if you need brick level backup of those databases, you may want to consider Acronis Recovery for Exchange or Acronis Recovery for MS SQL. You can also check this thread, where we have a similar discussion going.

Please take a look at this article from our Knowledge Base - Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Editions, it shows in more detail which components are included in each Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 version, as well as which add-on needs to be purchased separately. In case of Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 for SBS, the Acronis Universal Restore component comes at no extra cost.

I would definitely recommend checking this comparison list for ABR10 and you can always download a trial version and give it a go.

If you have any other questions or require additional assistance, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi Guys,

I have a question on the SBS Platform. We have a license of Advanced Server Virtual Edition. We want yo use the license to migrate de SBS to a VM. Can we use ABR10 VE or we need to use the SBS version.

Hello Jose!

Thank you for finding time to join us on Forum to ask about it! I'll be glad to help you.

Since you're need to migrate SBS Server, you will need to take a backup of SBS Server - thus you will need Acronis Backup and Recovery for SBS Server license. You can test it before making a decision whether it suits your needs. The trial license is full functional and backups created don't expire after demo version expiration. The only limitations are:

  1. 15 days of work
  2. trial bootable media can restore only

I would also advise you to take a look at the Installation, Quick Start and User's Guides - they contain all necessary information about product's functionality.

With the help of this product you can also convert the archive created directly to a new virtual machine! Please find more details about this function in the chapter 6.3.10 How to convert a disk backup to a virtual machine, p. 213 in the User's Guide.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Technically - yes, it will install on physical machine with SBS and work. Legally - yes, if you haven't installed it yet on the host machine on which the VM with SBS will be run.
